Harvesting Gratitude: Reflections on Community and Wellness

September has ended, and with it my heart is full of gratitude for the harvest of the season, and for the serendipity that has come from trying to build a very human brand rooted in culture, history, and seasonal rhythms.

Seeds of Change

Six months ago, I made a leap that many might recognize: I stepped away from a familiar role in marketing, driven by a longing to do work that felt closer to my values. It wasn’t a leap taken lightly or with instant clarity—more like a long, meandering search for meaningful impact, direct connection, and a sense that what I did each day truly mattered. As is often the case in our fast-paced city life, that inner misalignment eventually showed up as stress-related physical symptoms—reminders that the body and mind are rarely far apart.

Searching for relief brought me to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and, specifically, to the teas and dietary theory within it. At first, TCM was simply a tool to nurse myself back to health. Yet, the further I explored, the more I realized there was a rich history and set of values here around caring for body and spirit in ways that still make sense for overworked bodies that haven’t actually evolved much since the time these theories came about in the Zhou Dynasty, where understanding of disease shifted from divine punishment to lifestyle imbalances (Rochat de la Vallée, 2012).

This led, almost by accident, to the beginnings of my own wellness business. I wasn’t setting out to become a practitioner overnight, only experimenting with how small, practical changes I made for myself might be shared with others looking for easier, more connected ways to feel better.

Serendipity of Community

The biggest surprise in this journey hasn’t just been finding customers or learning business operations—it’s been discovering, and being supported by, a vibrant and unanticipated community.

Be it a lesson, a reminder or a relief, I have felt the value of what we build goes far beyond what’s measured in sales or accolades. Success can also be found in the relationships renewed, in the collaborations sparked, and in the confidence restored when strangers choose to trust you.

Some are driven by wanting to support local businesses, others by a resonance with shared values or simply a curiosity about new approaches to self-care. Many seem to see in my story a reflection of their own desire for meaningful, human-scale work—a reminder that there are still ways to connect, even in a hyper-competitive city.

So far, the greatest milestone was being offered a platform at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre—an opportunity that went far beyond my expectations. Their generosity gave me, an unknown founder, a chance to share these wellness teas with a truly aligned audience. It was the most successful sales weekend to date, but more importantly, it was a moment when community—new and old—rallied around me. Friends, family, and old colleagues showed up, bought products, helped at the booth, and promoted my work online and offline. Without this community support, none of it would have been possible.

Events like this reveal what numbers can't: people want connection. They want to hear the real stories behind what they consume and feel that someone understands the relentless juggle between career, family, ambition, and health.

In person, I was able to see eyes light up when people tasted something thoughtfully crafted. Some visitors even commented on the stories behind the tea—on honouring cultural roots while also updating wellness practices for today’s realities.

Hope in Uncertainty

All of this is not to gloss over the difficult moments. Like so many who strike out on new paths, there have been long stretches clouded with doubt or anxiety about not "fitting" into expected societal moulds; or being “irresponsible” and burdening my spouse and my family. For busy professionals, it’s easy to feel perpetually “not enough”—not optimizing, not hustling hard enough, not finding relief that lasts.

If you’re feeling the grind, if you've wondered if there’s an easier path to wellness than endless self-optimization or quick fixes, maybe this reflection offers a little hope: Even in times of mess and uncertainty, serendipity can surprise you. Community can root for you, even when you doubt yourself.

Maybe, despite how disconnected urban life can feel, there are ways to revive that connection—through community, heritage, and caring for yourself in small, meaningful ways. We all deserve a sense of belonging and a meaningful life true to our values.

A Final Word of Thanks

I want to use this space to thank the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre for believing in a small, hopeful venture. And more broadly, for every friend, family member, acquaintance, collaborator, and kind stranger who has given our teas a shot, I am immensely grateful.

For all who are trying to build something or find wellness in this city, my hope is that you, too, find an unexpected wealth of support and connection along the way.

Rounding back to serendipity, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre is hosting Wellness in the City from Oct 1 - Oct 9. Do pay a visit to their well curated events this month!
